Man who fell into Reeds Lake dies, police say

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A person who fell into Reeds Lake in East Grand Rapids Friday has died, according to police.

It happened around 11:40 a.m. The East Grand Rapids Department of Public Safety says officers got to the lake within one minute of a 911 call reporting someone in the water.

About 500 feet from shore, they found the unresponsive person in the water and two others in a fishing boat, which was taking on water. They got out to the three in a rescue boat and started first aid on the unresponsive person.

That person was rushed to the hospital, where he was listed in critical condition and later died, according to police.

Officers say he had lost his balance and fell into the water. He was able to hold on to the boat for a while but couldn’t grab the life jacket that his friends threw him.

The two others also received medical treatment.

Storm Team 8 says the water temperature on Reeds Lake was about 43 degrees Friday afternoon.
