Man fatally shot in pickup line outside of Florida elementary school: deputies

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A man was shot outside of an elementary school in Florida on Friday afternoon, according to officials.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Balfern Street in Port St. John around 1:20 p.m. for reports of a person being shot after a firearm accidentally went off.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene from what appeared to be a gunshot wound. It is unclear where that wound was.

Officials said the shooting was accidental and occurred in a vehicle in the pickup line on a roadway leading up to Challenger 7 Elementary School.

The school was immediately put into lockdown until an all-clear was given.

“I want to reassure our citizens and especially our parents, that this was an isolated incident that was completely contained inside a vehicle, and while the occupants were in fact headed to the nearby school to pick up their grandchild, they were not at the school or on school property when the incident occurred,” Sheriff Wayne Ivey said.

Officials are conducting witness interviews, as they continue their investigation to determine what exactly led up to the incident.

“I want to commend our BCSO Communications Center, our Deputies, and of course, our School Administrators and Teachers for how they responded to this critical incident and took every precaution to make certain that our school campus and students were safe from any potential harm,” Sheriff Ivey added.
