Man faces DUI charge after train hits vehicle at Lake City crossing

LAKE CITY, S.C. (WBTW) — Lake City police charged a man with driving under the influence early Friday after his vehicle was hit by a train at the Fairview Street crossing.

Thomas Ard, 19, of New Zion in Clarendon County, failed a sobriety test at the scene and was arrested and taken to the Florence County Detention Center, police said.

“The vehicle was either stalled or had gone off of the crossing onto the tracks and got stuck at around 12:20 a.m.,” Lake City Police Chief Patrick Miles said. “Thankfully, the driver was able to exit the vehicle before the train came through and wasn’t injured.”

The train did not leave the tracks, and the scene was cleared before dawn, Miles said. The crossing remains open.
