Man drowns trying to rescue his dog after truck ends up in pond, CA officials say

A man drowned Thursday while trying to save his dog from a submerged truck, California officials said.

The man lost control of his pickup truck and ran off the road and into Pacheco Pond in Novato, California, according to a California Highway Patrol news release.

“After the crash both occupants of the vehicle were able to exit through a window, prior to it sinking,” CHP said. “According to witness statements, the male observed his dog swimming away from the truck and re-entered the water in an attempt to rescue him.”

A woman who was in the pickup truck told witnesses that the man could not swim, and multiple people jumped into the water to save the man, according to the news release. No one could find the man in the pond, which is 10- to 12-feet deep.

Officials from multiple public safety agencies responded to the scene, and a dive team searched for the man and dog, CHP said.

Both were found dead.

The woman suffered minor injuries and was transported to a hospital, CHP said.
