Man dies of injuries after 'dispute' at Ontario Beach Park, deputies say

Monroe County sheriff's deputies say that a man died Wednesday night following a dispute at Ontario Beach Park.

Just before 8 p.m., deputies on patrol in the park heard someone scream and saw a man on the ground with a severe head injury, said Deputy Brendan Hurley. The determined that two men were involved in an argument that led to a physical altercation and resulted in the "significant head injury," Hurley said.

As deputies assisted the injured man, witnesses pointed out a person of interest who appeared to be leaving the scene, he said.

Deputies located that man, Carlos A. Mateo, 43, of Rochester and detained him for questioning. He was charged with criminally negligent homicide, a felony, and pleaded not guilty in City Court Thursday morning. He was released to pre-trial and is scheduled to return to court on June 7, according to court records.

The injured man, a 29-year-old Rochester resident, was taken to an area hospital where he died, Hurley said. Further details about the man were not released.

Deputies believe that what occurred in the park was an isolated incident, "a dispute between two parties."

Deputies continue to investigate the incident. Rochester police officers assisted deputies on scene.

Ontario Beach Park, a 39-acre county park located in Charlotte next to Lake Ontario, reopened Thursday morning.
