Man dies at Bergen County Jail after being treated for shooting injury in Paterson

PATERSON — Authorities are investigating last week’s death of a 29-year-old Paterson man who was being held at the Bergen County Jail after being injured in a city street shooting.

Officials have not revealed why Qadir McCrae was at the jail in Hackensack when he died, nor have they disclosed whether McCrae’s death was connected to his bullet wound or some other cause.

McCrae was injured in a shooting on March 6 near the corner of Main Street and Broadway in Paterson’s downtown business district, officials said. He was treated at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center until his release on March 11, hospital officials confirmed.

The Bergen County Jail’s online inmate records say McCrae was held there from March 11 until March 26, the day of his death.

Paterson police last week referred questions about McCrae’s death to the state attorney general’s Office of Public Integrity & Accountability. The Attorney General’s Office on Monday said “the death in custody” was being investigated by the Bergen County’s Prosecutor’s Office.

Paterson Press has not been able to contact McCrae’s family members.

The Paterson Healing Collective provides victim services to people who are shot in the area. That group’s executive director, Liza Chowdhury, did not respond to a message asking whether McCrae became one of the Healing Collective’s clients after he was shot.

McCrae’s funeral service is scheduled for Friday at United Presbyterian Church in Paterson.
