Man who died in Longmont skydiving incident is identified

Jan. 29—A man who died yesterday in a Longmont skydiving incident has been identified by the Boulder County Coroner's Office.

Gregory Coates, 36, died Sunday in the area of Nelson Road and Grandview Meadows Drive after skydiving through the Mile-Hi Skydiving organization.

At 3:37 p.m. Sunday, Longmont police and fire crews responded to the incident just south of the Vance Brand Municipal Airport, 229 Airport Road.

The man was wearing a wingsuit at the time of his death, Longmont police spokesperson Robin Ericson said in a Sunday news release. According to the release, it appeared that neither the skydiver's primary nor reserve parachute deployed.

The Federal Aviation Administration is leading the investigation into the accident. The Longmont Police Department and the Boulder County Coroner's Office will work with the FAA as the investigation continues.

In an email, FAA representative Tony Molinaro said they are investigating the packing of the main and reserve parachutes as well as the rules of flight for the pilot and aircraft.

This was at least the sixth skydiving fatality connected to Mile-Hi Skydiving since 2018.
