Man dead due to rockslide in ‘tent city’ area near J.R. Allen bypass

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — A man was found dead near the J.R. Allen bypass after the coroner’s office says he was crushed by a large boulder from a rockslide.

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan confirmed on Sunday night the unidentified male was trapped under the boulder, which seemingly slid down onto him due to recent heavy rain in the area.

Bryan described removing the body from the boulder as a “dangerous undertaking” which would take hours to unfold. At about 5 a.m. on Monday morning, Bryan did confirm the body had been removed.

The nearby area beneath the J.R. Allen bypass is commonly referred to as “tent city,” where some of the homeless population in Columbus regularly stay.

Individuals at tent city told Bryan the victim had not been seen in awhile. His body will be taken to the GBI in Decatur to be identified.
