Man in custody after shooting near Lynn Middle School in Las Cruces

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A man is in custody and another person is dead after a shooting near Lynn Middle School Wednesday morning, April 3 in Las Cruces, City of Las Cruces Public Information Officer Dan Trujillo said.

The incident happened at around 6 a.m. at the 2100 block of Lester Avenue, according to the Las Cruces Police Department.

Trujillo said one gunshot wound victim has been transported to UMC in El Paso and a man who is believed to be the suspect is currently in custody.

Due to the investigation, Lynn Middle School has been placed on a temporary lockdown and no students will be allowed onto the campus for now, Trujillo said.

Las Cruces Public Schools released a statement on Wednesday morning which is the following:

“An incident early Wednesday morning forced a lockdown of Lynn Community Middle School, 950 S. Walnut Street, while police complete an investigation. Police have assured Las Cruces Public Schools that there is no immediate threat to students or staff and a suspect is in custody. Students and staff scheduled to arrive for their regular school day are being rerouted to neighboring Sierra Middle School where staff are ready to serve breakfast and possibly lunch. Parents were advised they can keep their students home while administration waits for the all-clear from police.”
