Man in critical condition after shooting

Dec. 4—THOMASVILLE — An Archdale man was critically injured when he was shot in the chest during an argument at a Thomasville residence this past weekend.

Austin Knowles, 32, was in critical but stable condition Monday at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, the Thomasville Police Department said.

The shooting in the 1600 block of Blair Street was reported shortly after 11:35 a.m. Saturday, police said. Officers arrived to find Knowles lying in the front yard of the house.

Kevin Smith, 38, who lives at the house where the shooting took place, was arrested at the scene without incident, police said. Smith was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Smith recently moved back into the house with his ex-wife, who has been romantically involved with Knowles, police said. Knowles came to the house, and he and Smith argued.
