Man convicted of misdemeanor in assault on coach

A trained mixed martial arts fighter charged in the beating of a former high school wrestling coach was convicted of a misdemeanor and sentenced to 75 days in jail, time he has already served.

Kyle Watson Gray, 40, was originally charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury for an August 2020 incident in Belmont that left Meredith Scruggs, a former wrestling coach at East Gaston High School, hospitalized for over a month and in a coma.

Scruggs was hospitalized for more than a month with lacerations to his chin, a swollen eye, and injuries to his head, according to court documents.

Gray stood trial last week and was convicted by a jury of misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury.

Gray also previously faced a charge of threatening a legal officer, which stemmed from a post on Gray’s Facebook page that officers felt threatened former District Court Judge Richard Abernethy’s safety.

That charge was dismissed, according to court records.
