Man charged after walking around Clifton neighborhood in camo carrying rifle, police say

A Clifton man is facing criminal charges after walking around his neighborhood and home carrying a rifle Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

Clifton police responded to Union Avenue and Sixth Street at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday after a report of a man walking in the area holding a weapon, the department said on Facebook. Officers at the scene found the individual dressed in camouflage with a rifle strapped to his body.

The man, whose name was not released by police, retreated into his home after seeing the officers and remained there briefly before coming out with the weapon still in his possession. He then made "several concerning statements" and again went back in the house, police said.

The man eventually surrendered and was taken into custody before being transferred to a local hospital for mental health treatment. No one was injured during the incident.

Police later filed criminal charges against the man after recovering several additional weapons during a search of the home.
