Man charged in Tuesday KCK homicide, shooting gun at KU Hospital

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A 33-year-old man is charged in the killing of a woman in Kansas City, Kansas earlier this week and firing a gun inside KU Hospital.

The Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office charged Jessie Wayne Buchanan on Friday with second-degree murder in connection to the death of 42-year-old Latoya Seamster-Lawagbon.

Buchanan is also charged with criminal discharge of a firearm, animal cruelty and two counts of criminal damage to property.

According to KCK police, a man walked into the emergency room at KU Hospital on Tuesday night and told police he had killed someone.

Officers were then sent to a house on North Hallock, near N. 5th Street and Parallel Avenue, around 11:45 p.m. to investigate the incident.

When officers got to the house, they found a woman, identified as Seamster-Lawagbon, who had been shot and killed.

According to a news release from KU Health, when Buchanan was at the hospital, he shot a gun into the ceiling at the security entrance to the emergency department. KU police and security officers working at that entrance quickly took him into custody.

Emergency services in the hospital were not impacted by the gun being shot.

Buchanan made his first court appearance Friday morning. He’s currently being held in the Wyandotte County jail on a $250,000 cash only bond.
