Man charged after shooting in Baton Rouge, police say

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Baton Rouge Police Department arrested a man in connection to a shooting that took place after a verbal argument on March 16.

Malcolm Bernard, 21, was arrested as a fugitive on Friday, March 29, according to BRPD. Bernard was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

Officers responded to a reported shooting around 5:20 p.m. in the 3000 block of Iroquois Street. Upon their arrival, officers discovered that Bernard allegedly fired several shots at two victims who were inside a car, according to an affidavit.

The victims were not injured but the vehicle was damaged by gunfire, according to the affidavit.

According to the affidavit, a victim told police that Bernard “was upset because she had given her ex-girlfriend a ride home from work.”

Police were told that Bernard had “recently began dating her ex and that was the reason he was mad,” according to the affidavit.

A victim also told police “the two got into a verbal argument” and that during the argument he “produced a handgun and fired several shots at her vehicle,” according to an affidavit.

Police said Bernard is facing two counts of attempted first-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon and aggravated criminal damage to property.
