Man charged after officer dragged during arrest attempt in Fort Mohave, Arizona

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A 31-year-old man is charged with aggravated assault on an officer, resisting arrest and other felony charges after a deputy was dragged by an SUV during an arrest attempt on Saturday night in Mohave Valley, Arizona.

Javier Garibay Jr. was pulled over Saturday night just before 9:30 p.m. by a Mohave County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputy who observed the SUV speeding and weaving between lanes of traffic. Garibay, who was driving with a female passenger, pulled over when the officer caught up to him 2.3 miles north of that, according to details provided by MCSO.

When the deputy checked Garibay’s license, it showed an active warrant for his arrest.

The deputy told Garibay he was going to be placed under arrest and asked him to step out of the vehicle. Garibay did not comply, and the deputy tried to remove him from the SUV, according to an MCSO social media post.

Then Garibay accelerated, dragging the deputy about 10 feet until the deputy was able to remove his arm from the vehicle, according to the post. The deputy then alerted other deputies of the fleeing vehicle.

Deputies chased the SUV as it went south on U.S. 95, which the main road through town. The SUV flipped on its top and Garibay ran into a desert area near El Rodeo Road. Deputies pursued and took him into custody, transporting him to the Mohave County Adult Detention Facility in Kingman, MCSO said on social media.

The female passenger received minor injuries and declined medical attention.

Garibay also faces felony charges of endangerment and unlawful flight from law enforcement.
