Man charged in Oak Brook mall shooting killed while awaiting trial

One of the two men charged in a shooting that injured several people and sent shoppers scrambling at a suburban mall days before Christmas in 2021 has been killed in a drive-by shooting.

Tyran Williams was shot and killed Friday just before noon in the Beverly neighborhood when a blue vehicle approached him in the alley and someone inside opened fire.

Ald. Matt O’Shea (19th Ward) called it a “targeted” shooting and said police think Williams may have recognized his attackers and ran, leading them on a gunfire-filled chase.

O’Shea told WGN Investigates the shooting put the lives of students and staff at nearby Vanderpoel Elementary School in danger. He adds that bullets hit the school building as well as a car being driven by a teaching assistant.

“If this had been recess, imagine how many more students and staff could’ve been hurt,” O’Shea said.

Williams was on pre-trial release, facing aggravated discharge of a firearm charges for the December 23, 2021, shooting at the Oak Brook Shopping Center that injured four people. A second man, Steve Lane, was also charged in the shooting.

The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office said Williams was able to post a $100,000 bond several days after his arrest and was released with a GPS monitor and a requirement that he remain at home.

Three months later, DuPage County judge John Kinsella relaxed the home confinement restrictions, allowing Williams to leave his home between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. for work, religious services, and medical appointments.

CWB Chicago first reported on Williams’ connection to the Oak Brook mall shooting. The report said Williams was confronted in an alley behind his restaurant, Gusto’s Kitchen.

“I’m angry that someone involved in this type of criminal behavior had a business so close to a school and I wasn’t aware of it,” O’Shea said.

Chicago police say no one is in custody for Williams’ murder.
