Man charged with murder in connection to deadly shooting of 22-year-old in Topeka

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Shawnee County District Attorney is filing charges against a man accused of shooting and killing a 22-year-old at a Topeka apartment complex.

Kavshun J. Boykin, 26, is being charged with four counts on Monday, May 13. These include:

  • Murder in the first degree; premeditation

  • Murder in the first degree; inherently dangerous felony

  • Aggravated burglary of a dwelling

  • Criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

These charges stem from the deadly shooting of Cody Cooper in April. The Topeka Police Department (TPD) arrested Boykin on April 26.

Katie Garceran, a spokeswoman for the Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office, says the TPD was called on April 19 to Crown Point Apartments located at 3711 SW Park S Ct on reports of a shooting. Officers arriving at the scene found a man, later identified as Cooper, dead in one of the apartments. Investigators linked Boykin to the shooting and arrested him.
