Man charged in Independence shooting back in court with officers, chief in attendance
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 69-year-old man was back in court Friday three weeks after he allegedly shot and killed an Independence police officer and a Jackson County process server.
More than a dozen Independence police officers, including Chief Adam Dustman were all in attendance as Larry Acree went before a judge.
Acree applied for a public defender but was denied because of having too many assets. In others words money he could spend on hiring his own private attorney.
While everyone is entitled to a defense, the courts try to make sure this particular part of the system isn’t over used.

Despite all of that, Judge Page Bellamy said he was inclined to appoint a public defender anyways, but first needed to go over why exactly he was denied.
Acree appearing in court in a wheelchair, his arm still wrapped where he was shot on February 29.
That after he is alleged to have, in an ambush style, kill Drexel Mack, a 12 year veteran of the Jackson County Courts and Independence Officer Cody Allen, a father of two, husband, both dedicated public servants.

As the hearing Friday was wrapping up, the state requested from here on out that future court hearing be held at the Independence Police Department.
The judge was fine with that and so next Friday at 2 p.m. Acree will appear again before Judge Bellamy in the county where he is suspected of carrying out this crime.
