Man charged with dismembering dad claims sex abuse

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A Maine man charged with killing his father says he was sexually abused for his entire life.

Leroy Smith III was in Kennebec County Superior Court on Thursday. The 24-year-old is charged in the death of his father, whose dismembered remains were found Monday in at least nine plastic bags.

The Associated Press does not generally identify potential victims of sexual abuse. However, Smith gave an interview to WGME-TV (http://bit.ly/1j7WPMy ) in which he said he wanted to tell his story. In the interview, Smith confessed to the killing and said he did it for attention.

A police affidavit says Smith told police he recorded at least part of the crime and posted it on YouTube and Twitter, but took the posts down and deleted the video.

Smith was ordered held without bail. The judge also ordered him to undergo a mental health evaluation. He did not enter a plea.
