Man charged after attacking suspect who caused chase, multi-car crash in Palatine: police

PALATINE, Ill. — A man has been charged after attempting to attack a suspect involved in a police chase and multi-vehicle crash in Palatine.

James Howard, 26, was charged with a Class 2 Felony for Aggravated Battery to a Police Officer, a Class 4 Felony for Aggravated Resisting a Police Officer and a misdemeanor charge of Obstructing a Police Officer.

Police said around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, officers received calls involving suspects pointing handguns at people from inside a black SUV. Upon arrival, officers spotted the SUV exiting from Spruce Drive onto southbound North Rand Road at a high-rate of speed.

A police chase ensued and shortly after, the suspect vehicle struck multiple cars causing a chain reaction crash.

According to police, the 20-year-old driver of the suspect vehicle was taken into custody on scene. The 22-year-old passenger was arrested inside a nearby business after fleeing the scene on foot.

According to police, as the 20-year-old man was being arrested, Howard attempted to attack him in response to his girlfriend’s vehicle being crashed into.

A male Palatine officer intervened and sustained non-life-threatening injuries while taking Howard into custody. The injured officer was taken to an area hospital and later released.

Two arrested, gun recovered after multi-vehicle crash in Palatine

Police recovered two loaded handguns from the scene. The incident continues to be investigated and multiple charges are expected against the suspects involved.
