Man charged with attacking girls during St. Joseph break-in

FAWN RIVER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A man who was arrested two weeks ago near Sturgis for allegedly breaking into a home and sexually assaulting two girls has been charged, deputies say.

Miguel Hernandez-Ruiz, 25, was charged with first-degree home invasion and two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a person under the age of 13. He is a Mexican national, according to the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office, and being held on an immigration detainer, as his temporary work visa expired in December of 2021.

Deputies: Man broke in, sexually assaulted children

The charges stem from March 20, when deputies were sent to the Sweet Lake Manufactured Housing & Camping Resort Community, located at 31004 US-12 off of E Chicago Road, after receiving reports of a home invasion.

As they investigated, deputies learned that two girls under the age of 13 were sexually assaulted. The sheriff’s office used video surveillance and identified Hernandez-Ruiz as the suspect, who left the scene before being questioned. Deputies tracked him to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he was arrested.

Hernandez-Ruiz is being held without bond. He is set to appear in court on April 30.
