Police in Belleville, Ont., say they've arrested and charged a 30-year-old man with second-degree murder after responding to a call at a home early Tuesday morning.

Belleville police say they were called just before 1:30 a.m. to a home on Hastings Park Drive in the west end of the city.

When officers arrived, police say they found a 26-year-old woman dead inside the home. The 30-year-old man was also inside the home and was injured, police said in a news release Tuesday afternoon.

Police have identified the victim as Shannan Leigh Hickey of Belleville. Charged in her killing is Tyler Donnelly, also of Belleville.

Police said the accused and the victim "were in a previous intimate partner relationship however remained living in the same residence."

On Tuesday, Belleville police indicated the man would face a charge of first-degree murder "based on police observations and the initial investigation."

On Wednesday, they issued a news release saying the accused has instead been charged with second-degree murder.

Donnelly was taken to hospital in Kingston, Ont., and remains in police custody.

Belleville police say the investigation continues.
