The man convicted of violently assaulting Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) with a hammer in his home in San Francisco has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

On Friday, David DePape — the man who carried out the attack — was sentenced to 30 years in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons, according to an announcement from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California. In October 2022, DePape broke into the Pelosi home in an attempt to find the former speaker — who was not present in the residence — and attacked Paul Pelosi with a hammer, bludgeoning him over the head. Mr. Pelosi was hospitalized and underwent brain surgery to repair his injuries. A subsequent investigation found that DePape — who regularly espoused far-right views and QAnon conspiracy theories on his social media — intended to kidnap Rep. Pelosi, hold her hostage, and break her kneecaps.

DePape was convicted of assault and attempted kidnapping in October of last year.

In a statement released by Nancy Pelosi’s spokesperson Aaron Bennet, the Pelosi family stated that they couldn’t be “prouder of their Pop and his tremendous courage in saving his own life on the night of the attack and in testifying in this case.”

“Speaker Pelosi and her family are immensely grateful to all who have sent love and prayers over the last eighteen months, as Mr. Pelosi continues his recovery,” the statement continued.

DePape’s legal troubles are not over, and he is still awaiting a state trial in California on charges of residential burglary, elder abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment of an elder, and threatening the family member of a public official over the same attack.

Jury selection for the state trial, which will take place in San Francisco, will begin later this month.
