Suspect with BB gun who attempted to steal a phone in San Mateo arrested

(KRON) – A Hillsborough resident who attempted to steal a person’s cell phone was arrested, said the San Mateo Police Department.

San Mateo police officers received a 911 call regarding a man chasing another person near Coyote Point Park at 7:15 p.m. on Monday.

Upon arrival, officers found the victim who was being chased. The victim told police when he was walking, an armed man approached him and demanded his cell phone. The victim said the suspect was carrying a pistol in the waistband of his pants. The victim distracted the suspect and fled to Coyote Point Park. The suspect could not catch up with the victim and fled in a white SUV.

Police obtained the SUV’s license plate number from a witness to the incident.

Thief gave police false ID to avoid arrest in Colma

Officers later found the white SUV unoccupied parked in front of Target at the BridgePointe Shopping Center. The driver returned and was detained.

The suspect was identified as 33-year-old Hillsborough resident Michael Bruni. Police learned Bruni was on bail for a previous arrest.

Officers executed a search of the white SUV. The search yielded a BB gun that resembled a Glock handgun and narcotics paraphernalia.

Bruni was arrested and booked into San Mateo County Jail on various charges:

  • Robbery second degree

  • Exhibit a deadly weapon

  • Possess unlawful paraphernalia

  • Committing a Felony while on Bail
