A man who tried to strangle a GP surgery worker and attacked three others with a pole after not getting an on-the-day appointment has been jailed.

Olumuiwa Oduntan, 61, smashed the reception’s protective screen before climbing on the desk at the surgery in Ashton Old Road, Manchester in 2021.

He hit four workers, including a doctor, on their heads and tried to strangle a woman, Greater Manchester Police said.

Oduntan was given a six-and-a-half year sentence.

'Unprovoked violence'

He had telephoned earlier in the day to book an appointment and became “aggressive and threatening” when he heard none were available, police said.

A couple of hours later, he attended the surgery and became violent towards the front desk workers.

Oduntan smashed the screen with a barrier pole before climbing over and hitting three reception workers and a doctor and trying to strangle one of the women.

He pleaded guilty to four assaults, including affray, grievous and actual bodily harm at a trial at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.

He was also issued with a restraining order.

Det Con Philippa Barker said: “We are pleased with today’s result and hope it gives the victims, who each sustained serious injuries through unprovoked violence, some peace and enables them to heal from this horrific experience.”
