Man arrested after two shot in gas station carjacking

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police say a 19-year-old man stole a car at a gas station on South Parkway, then fired a gun at the car’s owner, hitting two people as he sped away.

Tony Whitaker is in jail on $60,000 bond, charged with two counts of aggravated assault, auto theft, aggravated burglary, theft of a firearm and evading arrest.

Just after midnight Tuesday, police responded to the shooting at a gas station on South Parkway at Lauderdale.

According to police, a man parked his Dodge Journey at a gas pump, left it running, then walked inside the store to buy some items. When he returned, he saw a man sitting in the driver’s seat of his vehicle.

The suspect sped away from the gas pump, firing several shots at the car’s owner, police say. The car’s owner and a woman outside the store were struck by bullets.

Police said both shooting victims were taken to the hospital. They are expected to recover.

About an hour and a half later, police got a call from a woman who told them she’d located her stolen Dodge Journey at the Ridgecrest Apartments in Frayser.

Officers made the scene and took the driver of the Dodge Journey into custody without incident. That person is not listed in the jail database.

But another man, Whitaker, took off running until he was caught by police.

Police say Whitaker confessed to stealing the Dodge Journey, along with a handgun.

Across the city of Memphis, there have been 2,693 vehicle thefts. However, that is still significantly lower than this time last year when we saw a total of 3,935 vehicle thefts.
