Man arrested after police say he side-swiped two patrol cars

CRAWFORD COUNTY, Kan. — A Southeast Kansas man is arrested after police say he side-swiped two patrol cars and left the scene.

Austin Lallemand, 25, of Walnut, is being held without bond at the Crawford County Jail on various charges related to driving under the influence.

Sheriff Danny Smith says two of his deputies were conducting a traffic stop early Friday (3/29) morning on K-126, just to the west of Pittsburg. The deputies had just placed two people from the stop into the back of their patrol cars and were standing nearby with another passenger.

The officers say they heard and saw a pickup speeding toward them — so they, and the passenger, jumped into a ditch to avoid injury. One of the people detained in a patrol car received minor injuries. No one else was hurt.

Officials say Lallemand was found a half-hour later, about seven miles from the scene. The Kansas Highway Patrol responded to the scene and are handling the investigation.

Lallemand is facing charges of DUI as a repeat offender, aggravated battery, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, along with a number of other charges.
