Man arrested for punching Intercity Transit driver, hitting guard with glass bottle

A 20-year-old man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of third-degree assault for an incident at the downtown Olympia transit center.

About 4:10 p.m. May 19, on an Intercity Transit bus that was approaching the center, the man began yelling and causing a commotion on the bus, Lt. Paul Lower said.

The bus driver told him to stop and called for assistance, Lower said.

After the bus stopped, and both driver and the man were exiting it, the man allegedly punched the driver in the arm then spat on his face and chest.

A security guard intervened, but the suspect said he had a gun and knife, then hit the security guard in the shoulder with a glass bottle. The driver and guard were not seriously injured, Lower said.

Assaulting a bus driver is a Class C felony, Lower added.
