Man arrested in Morganton after evading authorities during probation: Sheriff

MORGANTON, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man has been arrested after hiding from law enforcement for “some time,” according to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.

On Wednesday, January 31, officials say a multi-agency operation was carried out to find and arrest 46-year-old Wayne O’Neil, who was labeled as a federal felony probation absconder.

O’Neil was “actively avoiding detection” and was thought to be somewhere in Burke County, according to authorities. It was later learned that O’Neil was at a home on Lytle Drive in Morganton.

Investigators say O’Neil was arrested and taken to a federal jail in McDowell County, where he is being held without bond.

According to the NC Department of Adult Corrections website, O’Neil spent time behind bars in the 90s and early 2000s for various charges, including drug possession and sales.
