Man arrested after fleeing Hays police, causing elementary school to be notified to lockdown

HAYS, Kan. (KSNW) — A man has been arrested after attempting to flee from the Hays Police Department Tuesday morning.

According to the HPD, at 8:43 a.m., an officer attempted to pull over a red pickup truck for a traffic infraction. The truck then fled from the officer.

The officer was able to radio out the description of the truck and driver.

The driver had abandoned the truck and was hiding from law enforcement near Roosevelt Elementary School. The school was notified to lock down while police searched the area.

The driver was identified as a 32-year-old man. He was found and arrested. The pickup truck was towed and processed by officers.

The school was notified that the suspect was arrested.

The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Highway Patrol assisted in finding the suspect.
