Man arrested for DUI in stolen vehicle

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — A man is in custody after he stole a car from someone’s driveway, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.

MCSO Deputies at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday morning responded to reports of a stolen vehicle. A car was stolen while it was left running in the driveway of a house in the 2800 Block of Orchard Avenue, according to official reports.

Deputies used onboard navigation systems to find the car and follow it with unmarked cars before eventually using the onboard navigation system to slow the car’s acceleration while driving North on 25 Road.

23-year-old Fernando Munoz continued to drive the car into a construction zone, nearly hitting several workers before crashing into a fence near Eisenhauer Street and Fracture Avenue, according to the MCSO.

Deputies arrested Munoz and transported him to the Mesa County Detention Facility, where he faces several charges:

  • Aggravated motor vehicle theft

  • Vehicular eluding

  • Reckless endangerment

  • DUI

  • Drug possession

  • Numerous traffic violations
