Ortiz is scheduled to appear in federal court on Monday, May 20, 2024.

Police allege that Ortiz was being followed on April 10 by detectives investigating a separate felony case. Those detectives had uniformed officers conduct a traffic stop of the vehicle Ortiz was in. When Officers attempted to place Ortiz in handcuffs, he tried to flee.

The two uniformed officers and the two plainclothes detectives wrestled with Ortiz. During the struggle, police allege, Ortiz was able to disarm one detective by removing the gun and holster. The second detective was disarmed when Ortiz allegedly got the weapon out of the holster and fired shots at the uniformed officers.
