LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A 57-year-old Macomb County man will face six felony charges for allegedly threatening public officials in Shiawassee.

The Office of the Michigan Attorney Dana Nessel reports George Hamas of Washington, Mich. waived his preliminary examination Tuesday, sending the case to the circuit court.

He’s been charged with 6 felonies: four counts of False Report or Threat of Terrorism and two counts of Use of a Computer to Commit a Crime. If convicted as charged, Hamas could be incarcerated for up to 20 years in prison.

Hamas, the Attorney General’s Office alleges in a news release, sent multiple threats to Shiawassee county public officials in June 2022. Those included “threatening death and specific violent acts upon them,” the news release alleged.

The threats were delivered by both social media messages and phone calls.

Hamas will appear in 35th Circuit Court in Shiawassee County on March 22nd.

Instances of violent threats and even death threats made to public officials are occurring at increasing and alarming rates. The Hate Crimes and Domestic Terrorism Unit in my department stands ready to prosecute these very serious crimes, but it is also crucial that local authorities take these threats seriously, as they did here. We will not stand by and watch this behavior become a normal expectation for public servants and elected officials.
