Man accused of shooting at CPD officers on South Side charged

CHICAGO — Charges have been filed against a Chicago man accused of shooting at CPD officers on the city’s South Side on Monday afternoon.

According to Chicago police, 42-year-old Robert Austin, an Ashburn resident, has been charged with three felony counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm into an occupied vehicle.

Authorities say the charges were handed down after Austin allegedly fired shots in the direction of CPD officers who were responding to a call in the 400 block of West Englewood Avenue.

Police initially reported that the officers were responding to a call regarding a person with a gun in the area just after 4:30 p.m.

When they arrived on the scene, they spotted a man who matched the description of the individual from the call and said he was allegedly walking down the street with a gun in his hand.

The officers then saw the man allegedly raise the gun and heard one more shot.

The officers exited their patrol vehicle and ordered the man to drop the gun. Police say he complied and was quickly taken into custody.

The officers did not fire their weapons during the incident and no injuries were reported.

Austin appeared in court on Wednesday for a detention hearing.
