Man accused of recording tourist changing in bathroom stall in Clearwater

CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) — A New York man was arrested Sunday after police said he recorded a tourist changing in a bathroom stall in Clearwater.

A 25-year-old woman visiting from South Florida was changing in a bathroom along South Gulfview Boulevard around 1:30 p.m. Sunday when she said she saw a cell phone recording her from the stall next to her.

She told investigators the phone was being held under the divider that separates the two sides. The woman said she ran out of the bathroom and confronted 29-year-old Gabriel Mejias who was trying to get away.

The woman and her friend convinced the man to delete the video before officers arrived, Clearwater police said.

Police said Mejias admitted to officers that he videotaped the woman and surrendered his phone as evidence to be searched.

Mejias was arrested on a charge of video voyeurism.
