Man accused of mailing explosive package to Arpaio

PHOENIX (AP) — Federal investigators say an Oklahoma man mailed a package with explosives to Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Arizona last year.

U.S. Postal Service officials said Tuesday that 55-year-old Gregory Lynn Shrader is accused of sending the package addressed to the Maricopa County sheriff.

Investigators say the package was discovered April 11 in a Postal Service collection box unit in northern Arizona.

Authorities originally said the package appeared to contain an improvised explosive device that could have led to serious injuries or death if it was opened. But investigators later determined the device was inoperable.

It wasn't immediately clear Tuesday afternoon if Shrader, of Jay, Okla., was in custody. The allegations against him were outlined in a criminal complaint.
