Man accused of luring 23-year-old woman to her death is convicted of murder, cops say

Five people have now been convicted in the death of a 23-year-old Michigan woman, including the man accused of luring her to the location where she was killed, authorities said.
Michigan State Police announced the conviction April 2 of 21-year-old Brin Smith, who pleaded no contest to second-degree homicide in the 2023 death of Kayla Sedoskey.
Sedoskey’s body was discovered with three gunshot wounds March 2, 2023, at an abandoned juvenile detention center, Monroe County Prosecuting Attorney Jeffery Yorkey said in a news release.
“Smith lured Ms. Sedoskey to the abandoned Boysville facility under the guise that they would spend time alone there,” the prosecutor said. “Once there, Sedoksey was attacked by her killers.”
Smith is facing at least 40 years in prison, state police said.
Four others, including 45-year-old Steven Bails Jr., have also been convicted. Bails is the ex-boyfriend of Sedoskey, according to The Monroe News.
Bails was found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder following a jury trial that ended March 21, Yorkey said.
His wife, Narena Bails, and Sierra Bemis previously pleaded guilty to second-degree homicide, officials said. Alexander Feko also pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence and three counts of accessory to homicide after the fact.
A sixth person who was arrested in the case, Kaylyn Ramsey, is awaiting trial on homicide charges, according to state police.
All of the arrested individuals were at one point roommates, authorities told The Monroe News.
Sedoskey, who was part of the Saginawa Chippewas tribe, “enjoyed camping and being out in nature,” according to her obituary.
“Of her many passions in life, Kayla was dedicated to caring for the people around her,” the obituary read. “She will truly be missed by her friends and family.”
