Man accused of killing Charlotte mom, 2 kids transferred from CA to NC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A man accused of killing a Charlotte mother and her two children, who was caught hiding in a tent not far from the Mexico border, has been extradited to North Carolina, authorities confirmed with Queen City News on Friday.

Records show Benjamin Taylor, 34, was transferred from the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office in California to the US Marshal Service around 3:30 a.m. Friday, April 5, Pacific Time.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police confirmed Taylor is officially back in Charlotte Friday and is currently in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Taylor was booked at 3:30 p.m. Friday and charged with three counts of first-degree murder and felony conceal/failure to report a death. He’s being held without bond.

“The CMPD’s Homicide Unit would like to thank the FBI Charlotte field office, FBI Imperial County field office, the Imperial County Sherriff’s Office, and CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) for their assistance,” CMPD said on Friday evening.

Markayla Johnson and her children, 4-year-old Miracle Johnson and 7-month-old Messiah Johnson, were found dead in an apartment complex on Orchard Trace Lane in Charlotte on Friday, March 15, after the three were reported missing on March 3.

According to the NC Department of Adult Correction, Taylor has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 2007. Charges include B&E, assault, as well as weapon and drug-related charges.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing, CMPD said.
