Man accused of hit and run under the influence arrested on gun charges

(KRON) – A man who allegedly committed a hit-and-run after driving under the influence was arrested on gun charges on Wednesday, said the Gilroy Police Department.

Gilroy police officers responded to a report of a hit-and-run accident near Mantelli Drive and Wren Avenue at 4:25 a.m. on Feb. 28. Responding officers noticed a car collided with several parked vehicles and fled the scene.

Officers located the vehicle that fled not far from the scene. The driver was identified as 46-year-old Markus Beck.

In the police’s apprehension of Beck, they found a loaded firearm in the driver’s compartment and a loaded AR-15-style rifle in the trunk. According to police, both guns were registered to Beck.

Police said Beck was found to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.

On Feb. 26, police said Beck entered an office in the Luigi Aprea Elementary School to contact a female staff member who he believed worked there. School staff asked Beck to leave due to district protocols. Police said Beck loitered around the perimeter of the school in his departure. The school staff contacted the GPD. Gilroy PD contacted Beck at his residence in the 9200 block of Mockingbird Lane and advised him to stay away from the school.

Officers obtained a gun violence restraining order to seize any additional firearms and ammunition in his residence in the 9200 block of Mockingbird Lane. Responding officers discovered that a gas stove had been emitting gas within the residence, posing a significant risk of fire or explosion.

This caused a brief lockdown for Luigi Aprea Elementary School. Neighboring homes were evacuated to ensure safety.

The Gilroy Fire Department and Pacific Gas & Electric responded to secure the residence.

No injuries or property damage was reported.

Beck was arrested and booked at Santa Clara County Jail for driving under the influence, hit-and-run, and illegal storage of firearms.
