Man accused of fatally shooting ‘longtime friend’ over $35, Georgia officials say

A 65-year-old is going to prison after being accused of fatally shooting his friend over $35, Georgia officials said.

In January 2022, Rickey Carter used a small handgun to shoot and kill his “longtime friend,” Quinlan Parker, 48, according to a March 19 news release by the DeKalb County district attorney.

Carter knocked on the door of Parker’s Decatur apartment, and he and his wife answered, prosecutors said.

Carter was invited into the home and began arguing with Parker about money he owed Carter, officials said.

During the yelling, Parker’s stepdaughter left her room and started recording the fight on her phone, officials said.

Carter said he shot Parker in self-defense, but the video showed Parker “backing away,” before Carter “opened fire,” prosecutors said.

Then Carter left Parker’s home and his wife started CPR until medical personnel arrived, the district attorney said.

Officers found Parker shot once in the chest, officials said.

Carter was found guilty March 18 of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, prosecutors said.

He was sentenced to life in prison plus five years, the release said.

Decatur is about a 10-mile drive northeast of downtown Atlanta.
