Man accused of deadly shooting near fruit-packing plant in Lodi

(FOX40.COM) — A 41-year-old man was arrested in connection to a deadly shooting near a fruit-packing plant in Lodi, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said the 41-year-old man is facing charges related to murder, felony possession of a firearm, and the prohibition of a street gang member owning or possessing ammunition.

The 41-year-old suspect is accused of shooting and killing 27-year-old Jorge Cortes Bejar while he was working on the property of Rivermaid Trading Company on East Pine Street.

The suspect was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on Wednesday morning.

On Monday, the sheriff’s office said deputies responded to reports of the shooting at 10 p.m. and when they arrived, they located a man with multiple gunshot wounds.

Officials said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene after life-saving measures were attempted.

On Tuesday night, the sheriff’s office said it received information at 11:04 p.m. that the Manteca Police Department spotted a vehicle linked to the suspect near Louise Avenue and Airport Road.

Officials said they were told by Manteca police that the vehicle’s occupant was “likely armed and dangerous” and the Manteca officer followed the vehicle until his backup arrived.

Once backup arrived, the officer stopped the vehicle on Walnut Road north of Yosemite Avenue and the driver was positively identified as the shooting’s suspect, the sheriff’s office said.

The suspect initially complied, but eventually ran away, leading to Manteca police setting up a perimeter in the area. San Joaquin County deputies were notified and shortly arrived at the area along with a helicopter from Stanislaus County helping in the search for the suspect.

After the search was concluded, the 41-year-old man was arrested and a firearm was located.
