Man Accused In Deadly Crash That Killed CHP Officer, 1 Other Faces Up To 7 Years
The 3-year-old girl hit in the head by a stray bullet Tuesday night while inside her Sacramento home has been declared brain-dead by doctors at the UC Davis Medical Center, a family spokesman told KCRA. The girl, known only by her first name, Azalya, will be removed from life support Monday evening. The shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday on Della Circle, near 68th Avenue and Power Inn Road. Investigators believe Azalya was inside a home when shots were fired from outside near the street, the Sheriff's Department said. The 3-year-old was not the target of the shooting. She was shot at least once, Sgt. Shaun Hampton said. "The child suffered some very traumatic injuries here as a result of this incident," he said. In an interview with KCRA Friday, the girl's father, Darnell Grey, described her as a fighter. "Strong, very strong. Smart. She was before her time, though, before her time. She didn't take no for an answer. She always fought back. She wasn't going to give up. She still hasn't give time. She's not a quitter, She's not a quitter," Grey said. Hampton said Wednesday the department is relying on the community to come forward with information about the shooter. "We know that they have to live here, but we also have a crime, a very serious and tragic crime to solve, and we're relying on the community for that," Hampton said the day after the shooting. "We've spent a considerable amount of time in this community, even prior to this event. Just last weekend, we had a unity in the community event over here at Rutter Park. It's something we've done throughout the county to try to bridge the gap and try to create that two-way communication within our neighborhoods." Hampton said investigators are looking for surveillance cameras from nearby homes that may have captured the shooter or a vehicle the shooter was driving. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Sheriff’s Department at 916-874-5115. Neither a motive nor any suspect descriptions have been released publicly. The Rocklin man accused of causing a deadly crash where a California Highway Patrol officer and another person were killed is due in court Monday morning. Sean Walker, 36, faces a number of felony charges in connection with the deadly crash in Fairfield. Walker faces two felony charges of gross vehicular manslaughter and one count of reckless driving causing fatal injuries. If convicted, he could have to serve up to seven years in prison. Investigators said this is also a case of distracted driving because he was texting moments before the crash on Aug. 10. The crash happened on westbound Interstate 80 at Manuel Campos Parkway/North Texas Street. Officer Kirk Griess was conducting a traffic enforcement stop with Jaime Manuel, who was driving a Saturn SUV. The two were pulled over on the right shoulder when a Chevrolet pickup truck veered over and hit Griess and the Saturn, CHP said. The prosecution will be arguing that both deaths were preventable. Walker will appear in court for his arraignment at the Solano County Courthouse at 8:30 a.m.
