Man, 53, bashed in head with hammer in unprovoked Prospect Park attack

A 53-year-old man was seriously injured when he was struck in the head with a long blunt object and a hammer in an unprovoked attack inside Prospect Park, police said Monday.

The victim was hit with either a cane or bat around 12:20 p.m. near Prospect Park West and 16th St. on Saturday, cops said.

The victim, who is Hispanic, was then hit in the head with a hammer.

“There’s nothing said,” Chief of Detectives James Essig said. “He was just hit in the head.”

He was taken to Methodist Hospital, where he is in the intensive care unit. He is expected to survive, police said.

The attacker, a stranger to the victim, is still being sought.

The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force was investigating the case Monday.
