Mamas’ March at Capitol to support women of color

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Tuesday, a Detroit-based group called Mothering Justice gathered at the Capitol for the 12th annual Mamas’ March.

Dozens of people came out to show their support for mothers and women of color. The goal was to address the problems that these groups face every day.

Speakers highlighted areas with inequalities and imbalances before everyone broke into groups to lobby with elected officials. “From healthcare disparities to economic injustices, we are here to tell our lawmakers enough is enough,” said one speaker at the event.

The group hoped to emphasize their need for things such as affordable childcare, paid leave, and other basic needs.

Group leaders say that no one should have to decide between being a mother and going to work. Among other things, they are advocating for the ability to take care of their loved ones and themselves when necessary, without worrying about missing work.

One main focus of Mothering Justice is to encourage and empower women of color to speak directly to people in power, even though it can be intimidating.

“There are so many different laws and legislations that are coming out that are involving us … but we’re not included in how those are made,” said Christina Hayes, paid leave organizer for Mothering Justice.

Mothering Justice aims to provide these women with the tools they need to make change.

“We help train people [on] how to speak to your elected officials, what to do to make change, [and] how to be community organizers in your families,” Hayes continued. “We are letting people know that that’s something we can do with ease. We’re letting people know that these elected officials work for us.”

On May 9th, the group will host another march in Washington, D.C.
