Malbis historic water tower to be demolished

MALBIS, Ala. (WKRG) — The perfect photo of the Malbis Plantation water tower is what Raynor Brown was trying to find Tuesday before it’s too late, “Before they tear it down.”

UPDATE: Suspect arrested in Daphne homicide, police say

The nearly 100-year-old structure is coming down because of safety concerns.

“We’re sad to see it go,” Daphne Utilities Communications Director Samantha Coppels said. “We understand it’s important for so many people, and it’s been here for so long. It’s a piece of history, and we understand that. It’s just not safe to keep up anymore.”

Time and the elements have not been kind to the metal structure. During the last inspection, it was determined something would have to be done.

“We just wanted to make sure the community is safe that’s why it had to come down,” Coppels said. “We want to be sensitive to the fact that it is important to people but also keep the safety in mind as well.”

The water tower has not worked in decades, but still, it’s a landmark, a symbol of some of the earliest settlers of Baldwin County and something Raynor Brown will miss.

“It’s part of Malbis,” Brown said. “It’s part of here. It’s an icon; it’s tradition,” and now an image captured on her phone. A memory of what once was.

Daphne Utilities has not set a date for the demolition of the tower.
