Majority of Ukrainians support ban on Ukrainian Orthodox Church Moscow Patriarchate

A total of 63% of Ukrainians support a complete ban on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) in the country, a survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology on May 7 suggests.

54% of Ukrainians backed such a decision in December 2022, rising to 66% by May 2023, the survey said.

83% of respondents believe that the state should intervene in the activities of the UOC-MP to some extent, the survey said. This represents an increase from 78% in December 2022 to 85% in May 2023.

Meanwhile, 20% of respondents currently advocate for a somewhat "softer" approach, which does not include a complete ban but involves the establishment of state control and oversight. This figure decreased from 24% in December 2022 to 19% in May 2023.

12% of Ukrainians hold the view that there should be no interference in the affairs of the UOC-MP and that only individual possible cases of violations should be investigated. This figure remained stable at 12% from December 2022 to May 2023 but increased to 6% in May 2023.

More people supporting a full ban on the UOC-MP are located in the western and central parts of Ukraine (69% and 68% respectively), the KIIS said. In contrast, in the southern and eastern Ukrainian oblasts, the figures are 55% and 46% respectively.

The survey was conducted between April 20-25, 2024, using the Computer-Assisted Telephone Interview (CATI) method. It involved adult citizens of Ukraine aged 18 and above. A total of 1,220 people residing in all regions of Ukraine, except for the temporarily occupied Crimea, were surveyed.
