Majority of public votes yes for USD 435 bonds

Apr. 18—After another low election turnout, USD 435 will issue bonds to fund the renovations and improvements to the Abilene High School's science department.

The unofficial results of the April 18 special election showed 348 people voted yes, and 125 voted no. Only 8% of voters cast their ballot. Jeanne Livingstone, county clerk, said one voting location saw only four people vote.

The canvass for the special election will be April 25 at 11:45 a.m. after the Dickinson County Commissioners meeting.

The school district will be issuing $3 million in bonds. The rooms in the department were built in the mid 1950s. The bonds will last for 13 years to 2036. The school's tax rate will remain the same as it was in 2023 since the school finished paying off $4 million bonds earlier this year.

The next election is the primary election Aug. 6.

The unofficial result can be found on the Dickinson County website at www.dkcoks.gov/1259/Unofficial-Election-Results. For questions, call the county clerk's office at 785-263-3774.
