Majorca building collapse – latest: Restaurant unveiled terrace day before incident as details of dead emerge

A restaurant in Majorca promoted a new rooftop terrace just one day before the building collapsed, leaving four people dead, five seriously injured, and 11 wounded in hospital.

Rescue teams have been working at the scene of the Medusa Beach Club, a popular tourist restaurant at a packed beach resort, amid fears more people could have been trapped under the rubble after the incident at around 8.30pm on Thursday.

A terrace where people were dancing fell onto the floor below, according to the Balearic Islands’ public television IB3, with local officials telling reporters excess weight on a first-floor terrace may have caused the collapse.

It came one day after Medusa Beach Club posted a photograph of a terrace on its Instagram, alongside the caption: “Totally different, new rooftop.”

Spain’s National Police said two German women, aged 20 and 30, were among those killed, along with a 33-year-old Spanish woman, who worked in the club, and a 44-year-old Senegalese man.

The Independent understands the UK Foreign Office has not received any reports of British nationals involved.
