How major US stock market indexes fared on Monday

Worries that Washington may not be able to help businesses as much as once thought knocked stock indexes down hard early Monday, before they clawed back most of their losses and ended the day mixed.

On Monday:

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 2.39 points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,341.59.

The Dow Jones industrial average sank 45.74, or 0.2 percent, to 20,550.98.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 11.64, or 0.2 percent, to 5,840.37.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks picked up 2.68 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,357.32.

For the year:

The S&P 500 is up 102.76 points, or 4.6 percent.

The Dow is up 788.38 points, or 4 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 457.26 points, or 8.5 percent.

The Russell 2000 is up 0.19 points, or less than 0.1 percent.
