How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared Friday

The stock market ended the week with a modest gain after investors found bright spots in the government's monthly employment survey. Higher earnings from several U.S. companies including Expedia also encouraged investors.

On Friday:

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 165.55 points, 1.1 percent, to 15,794.08.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 23.59 points, or 1.3 percent, to close at 1,797.02.

The Nasdaq composite added 68.74 points, or 1.7 percent, to 4,125.86.

For the week so far:

The Dow is up 95.23 points, or 0.6 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 14.43 points, or 0.8 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 21.98 points, or 0.5 percent.

For the year so far:

The Dow is down 782.58 points, or 4.7 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 51.34 points, or 2.8 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 50.73 points, or 1.2 percent.
